Reset Your Senses

Is it really possible? A Healthy life style isn’t just about the foods you eat and how many steps you do in a day to hit your exercise goal. It also involves the music you listen to, the feel of your clothing on your skin, your surroundingsscents we take in, the thoughts we dwell on, etc. All of these aspects, set the tone for either healthful function or dysfunction in our mind. Which therefore can lead to either health or dysfunction of the physical body.

One of the largest environmental influences, some may not even recognize, is the change of seasons. Lengthy exposure to different weather patterns brings about different symptoms in the body and mind.

Ayurveda, the focus of a natural and holistic approach to physical and mental health, teaches that changes occur within our bodies, when there is excess heat, cold, or moisture in the atmosphere.  An example of this is the common experience of seasonal allergies in spring. The buildup of moisture in the environment leads to congestion in the body. Another example is the experience of Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD, a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health during most of the year present depressive symptoms at the same time each year, generally in winter. The cold and ungrounding nature of winter penetrates the body and mental state, leaving us in a state of depression, anxiety or even grief.

Spring and Fall months, are the perfect time to flush and detoxify the body and mind of build-up, such as mucus, toxins, weight gain, undigested emotions from seasons passed. Spring provides many ways to detoxify and refresh all of our senses, flushing away those winter woes and stepping into a fresh view.

Take a few minutes to notice if you’re experiencing heaviness, mental fog, grief, congestion, aches and pains, an inability to get out of bed in the morning, anxiety or depression. If so, consider starting with a 5-senses cleanse, as you move into spring. Start with clearing out clutter, find breaks for silence, eat seasonal vegetables, open a window, take walks in nature. Look for ways to feel refreshed and at peace. These are just a few tips to get your Spring on!!! Enjoy!
